Common sense may dictate that seeing ice on your air conditioner is actually a good sign. After all, your AC is meant to cool your home, and what’s cooler than ice? In fact, though, ice on one’s air conditioner system is indicative of a problem. Pinpointing precisely which problem you’re up against is a job for a professional. Read on to learn a bit more about why your AC may ice up.
Refrigerant Leaks
One potential cause of icing on your air conditioner is a refrigerant leak. Your evaporator coil is the point in your system in which refrigerant is evaporated in order to absorb heat from the air passing over it. If you have a refrigerant leak, there may not be a sufficient amount of air in your coil in order to facilitate the necessary heat transfer in your system. When that happens, the condensation the collects on the coil can wind up freezing, as the coil itself gets too cold. You could also see ice develop on your refrigerant lines outside, which even more strongly suggests the presence of a refrigerant leak.
Dirty Filters
If you have a dirty air filter in your air conditioning system, the airflow over the evaporator coil may be impeded enough to cause the coil to ice over. If there is not enough warm air flowing over the coil during the cooling cycle, after all, that coil is going to get colder than it should. If this is the case, simply cleaning or replacing the filter is likely all that you’ll need to get the system back on track.
