While the hottest time of the year may not have arrived quite yet, we’re definitely seeing temperatures high enough to justify turning on our trusty air conditioning systems already. If you notice that there is a problem with your home cooling system, you must remember that it is always in your best interest to schedule prompt air conditioning repairs in Spring, TX. Of course, you should also remember that problems with your AC may not always be what they appear. That is why it is so important to work with a qualified technician. One rather deceptive problem that you may encounter is an AC that is leaking water.
How Do Water Leaks Develop?
When your pipes corrode, or if their fittings should loosen, the water distributed throughout your plumbing system can leak out into your living space. Unlike your plumbing system, though, your air conditioner does not actually contain any water. That means that it really cannot develop a water leak, per se. This does not mean, though, that your eyes are playing tricks on you. It is very possible that there is water pooling around your system. But why?
One potential cause of this water accumulation is melting ice. Contrary to what you may believe, ice forming on your air conditioner is never a good sign, and it doesn’t mean that your system is just cooling your home a little too effectively. In fact, ice forming on your system may mean that you have a very clogged air filter, a very dirty evaporator coil, or even a refrigerant leak in your system. All of these problems can hinder the heat transfer process, causing the evaporator coil to freeze. When the ice on it melts, it can give the impression of a water leak.
Another reason for this water “leak” is a backed up condensate drain line, or a damaged condensate pan. Your AC dehumidifies the air as it runs. It must remove the condensation from your home, and it does so by catching it in a drain pan and draining it via a drain line. Should the pan be improperly placed, or the line backed up, you will see that condensation spilling out of the system.
