Tips for a Smooth Transition to Fall

Fall is in full swing, and while Texas might not be known for its frigid temperatures, it’s still a great excuse to make some changes and upgrades around the house. Transition yourself and your home into the spirit of fall with these tips:

Flush Your Water Heater

There’s nothing worse than stepping into the shower on a cold winter morning expecting steamy hot water and finding that it’s ice cold. One way to prevent this is by properly caring for your home’s water heating system. A lot of people don’t know the care routine that’s necessary for a well-functioning water heater but it luckily doesn’t require too much work.

Typically all you’ll need to do is flush it out completely once or twice a year, depending on how much mineral content is in your water supply. Flushing the tank will drain it of water, but also any sediment that has collected at the base. Removing the sediment will keep the tank from rusting and will also help to remove mineral content from the rest of your home’s water supply.

Rearrange Your Closet

Some people color coordinate their clothes, but we recommend organizing your closet by season, and as the seasons change move sections of your wardrobe to the front! Those tank tops, dresses, and shorts that you wear nonstop in the summer won’t be much good to you in the fall and winter, so rotate those to the back of the closet and move your sweaters, jeans, and jackets to the front.

This ensures that you actually wear all of the clothes in your closet and it can also serve as a great opportunity to go through your clothing and donate items you don’t wear anymore!

Replace Your Air Filters

Indoor air quality is important 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, especially given how much time we spend inside of our homes these days. And we spend even more time inside during the winter months. There are several ways to care for and improve your indoor air. You could install an air purifier that will actively circulate air and remove impurities. You could install a humidifier that will help to maintain the moisture in your home’s air, this is especially important in the winter when air is at its driest.

Last but certainly not least, you should replace your air filters at least every 90 days, but more frequently if anyone in your home has sensitive allergies.

Make a List of Fall Activities

Fall activities don’t just have to be for the kids, make one for family activities and one for just the adults!

Kid’s List:

  • Go to the pumpkin patch

  • Carve the pumpkins or paint them

  • Watch spooky movies

  • Make fun fall-themed treats

Adult’s List:

  • Attend a college or pro football game - nothing says fall-like football season!

  • Make some mulled wine and sip it during a movie

  • Walk through a haunted house

  • Take a couples road trip to see the leaves change colors
